Should I get my ears cleaned and how?

Ear wax is normal and helps to keep our ear canals healthy, for some people it builds up and can become a problem.

Signs you may need to get your ears cleaned:

Your ears may feel:

  • Blocked
  • Sore
  • Itchy

You may even notice a change in your hearing, some people can even feel off balance.

If the wax is left to build up too much it can result in ear pain and can increase the chance of developing a bacterial or fungal growth. This is particularly common in the summer months when we are spending more time swimming and water can become trapped in the ear canal. Wax can also cause issues with hearing aids by blocking them up.

The ear is an amazing and delicate system, it is very important that anyone working in your ear is sufficiently qualified and has a high level of knowledge of the entire auditory system to ensure they fully understand what they are doing. A big part of this is also knowing when it is not safe to continue with the procedure, as not causing harm is always our first priority. We have 3 full-time hearing professionals who are performing wax removal in accordance with the New Zealand Audiological Society’s best practice guidelines, (our Audiologist Sara was one of the experts that developed these) so you know you are in good hands.
