Types of Hearing Loss

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

This is a hearing loss resulting from an issue with the organ of hearing (cochlea).

These hearing losses typically cannot be treated medically.

These losses are often due to noise exposure, aging, medications or trauma.

Conductive Hearing Loss

This is a hearing loss resulting from an issue with the middle ear or ear canal. Sometimes these losses can be treated medically or surgically.

These losses can be due to a blockage in the ear canal, a hole in the ear drum, fluid in the middle ear or an issue with the middle ear bones

You can have a combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss.

Central Hearing Loss

This is a hearing loss resulting from the brain not being able to process sounds.

This is something you can be born with or acquire.
